Holland/Rao Earn Bethany SAAC Athlete of the Week Awards

April 7 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee announced on Tuesday afternoon that sophomore track & field athlete Lauren Rao (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) and sophomore lacrosse attackman Jake Holland (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) have been named the Bison SAAC Athletes of the Week.

Rao picked up her first victory of the outdoor season, capturing top honors in the high jump at the Bethany College Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Rao, the 2015 PAC indoor high jump champion, defeated the rest of the field in the event by finishing the competition with a leap of 4' 9 3/4".

Along with her field event, Rao also competed in both the 200-meter dash, as well as the 4x100 meter relay. She posted a ninth-place finish in the 200 (28.38), before helping the 4x1 relay team to a first-place finish with a time of 51.50.

Holland helped the Bison to their first ORLC victory of the season, as the team defeated Defiance College 16-7 on Saturday. The Bison dominated the first half, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 12-1. During that run, which entailed a 9-0 advantage in the second quarter, Holland posted nine total points, including three goals and six assists.

Through 11 games this season, Holland has amassed 48 points, currently ranking him tied for first place in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference, 16 points ahead of the third-place player. Holland also sits alone on top of the ORLC leaderboard in total assists, having posted a Bethany record 28 with five games to go this season.

Along with leading the conference in two separate offensive categories, Holland also currently sits just three points shy of setting the single-season Bethany record for points in a season. The record is currently 50, set by Kyle Arrington in 2013.

Other nominees for Bison SAAC Athlete of the Week included sophomore baseball players Zach Schlotter (Twinsburg, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) and Cody Gross (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin ),  freshman men’s tennis standout Mason Schoonover (Elkins, W. Va./Elkins), and track & field juniors Umar Moore (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon) and Kyle Minger (Richmond, Ohio/Edison Local) for the men, as well as senior Kelsea Bish (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) and junior Deana Mihalco (Patterson, N.Y./Brewster) from the softball team, and junior track athlete Maria Jackson-McBride (Spotsylvania, Va./West Potomac) for the women.
