April 22 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has announced that junior Matt Shaffer (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) from the Bison baseball team, and softball outfielder Kayla Kelly (Pasadena, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) have been named the Bethany SAAC Athletes of the Week.
Shaffer earned a spot in the Bison starting lineup for Bethany's three-game series with Waynesburg University and produced immediately, collecting six hits in the series while posting four RBI and a batting average of .462. In Bethany's 10-9 win at Waynesburg on Friday, Shaffer tallied a career-high four-hit performance while driving in a pair of runs. He once again led the way in the team's 9-8 loss in the second game of a doubleheader, posting two hits, including a double, two RBI and a pair of runs scored.
In 11 games this season, Shaffer has produced a batting average of .304, collecting 10 hits in 33 at bats. He has also totaled four RBI on the season, while slugging .333 on the year.
Kelly continued to be a solid offensive force for the Bison in ten games last week. Kelly posted a batting average of .400 on the week while slugging .633 with a double and a pair of home runs. During the 10-game stretch, she notched a hit in six of the 10 games for the Bison, registering a multi-hit game in five of those six.
In a doubleheader sweep of Franciscan, Kelly proved to be a tough out, going 4-4 with three runs scored and five RBI combined between the two contests. The junior also tallied five hits and a trio of runs scored in Bethany's conference doubleheader sweep of Geneva.
Currently, Kelly ranks fifth in the PAC in batting average, hitting .398 on the season. Slugging .643 on the year, she ranks third in runs scored (29) while leading the conference in triples with four. Her 63 total bases ranks fourth in the PAC while she leads the conference in stolen bases with 13.
Other nominees for the SAAC Athletes of the Week included, junior track athlete Umar Moore (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon), senior pitcher Harrison Rightmyer (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson) and freshman tennis standout Mason Schoonover (Elkins, W. Va./Elkins) for the men, and freshman pitcher Cassie Weiss (Washington, Pa./McGuffey), sophomore field athlete Lauren Rao (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) and freshman track runner Whitney Martin (Wintersville, Ohio/Indian Creek) for the women.
