MAY 13 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has announced that track standouts, freshman Whitney Martin (Wintersville, Ohio/Indian Creek) and junior Kyle Minger (Richmond, Ohio/Edison Local) have been tabbed as the Bison SAAC Athletes of the Week.
Martin shone bright at the 10th-annual Gator Invitational hosted by Allegheny College last week. On the day, Martin competed in two events, helping the Green & White capture a pair of Bethany records. She first posted a time of 12.19 in the 100-meter dash prelims, helping her earn a spot in the ECAC Championships. The time also broke the school record in the event, bettering Paige Prato’s mark from a season ago.
Martin then ran the anchor leg on the women’s 4x100-meter relay team that set a new Bison standard. The team posted a time of 47.81, marking the first sub-48 time in school history. At the time of completion, the mark was good for 18th in the Nation, while also qualifying the team for ECACs.
Minger also competed well at the Gator Invitational last week, breaking a record of his own, while tying another. In the 200-meter dash, Minger posted a time of 22.05, marking the same time that he posted at the PAC Championships.
In the 400-meter dash, Minger was on top of his game, dropping his school record time by .5 seconds, from 48.73 to 48.23. Having already qualified for the ECACs in the event, the mark helped moved Minger one-step closer to qualifying for Nationals, as he went from the 46th fastest time in the country to the 21st.
Other nominees for SAAC Athlete of the Week included freshman softball ace Cassie Weiss (Washington, Pa./McGuffey) for the women, and junior All-American Umar Moore (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon) for the men.
