March 4 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has announced that sophomore track standout Kyle Minger (Richmond, Ohio/Edison Local) and women’s basketball senior all-conference performer Taylor Verrico (Monaca, Pa./Quigley) have been named the Bethany SAAC Athletes of the Week.
Minger made the most of the inaugural Presidents’ Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, capturing the individual title in the 400 meter dash. He set a meet record in the race, posting a time of 49.63. He also nabbed another title, helping the men’s 4x400 meter relay squad capture first with a time of 3:29.86. He finished the day by scoring two fourth-place finishes in the 200 meter dash (22.82) and the high jump (5’10”).
In the indoor campaign, Minger was dominating in the 400 meter dash. Over five meets, Minger placed in the top ten on all five occasions. He also won the event four out of the five times.
In her final contest as a Bison, Verrico would put on a performance to remember, scoring a career-high 36 points including seven triples, which would tie a Bethany single-game high (Jennifer Rodkey's on Jan. 14, 1996, against Waynesburg). Although the Bison fell in overtime against Washington & Jefferson, the outing also marked the most points scored by a Bison since Kelley Richardson notched 36 points in the 2003-2004 season.
Following the season, Verrico was named an Honorable Mention All-PAC selection. She recorded a stellar final year for the Bison, ranking eighth in the league in points (14.1) and ninth in defensive rebounds per game (5.0).
Other nominees for SAAC Athletes of the Week included men’s basketball senior Lawrence Weldon (Baltimore, Md./Poly) and women’s senior track standout Paige Prato (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes).
