BISON ERUPT LATE IN 12-5 VICTORY AT GROVE CITY
March 23 - GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Bethany College baseball team never trailed in its PAC game at Grove City Friday, as the Bison took a 5-0 lead in the second inning and clinched the win with six runs in the top of the ninth in a 12-5 triumph over the Wolverines.
Sophomore 3B Juls Leto (McKees Rocks, Pa./OLSH) started a big day by singling with one out in the first, stole second, took third on a passed ball and scored on a single by sophomore LF Dylan Wassel (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward). In the second inning, a GCC error helped Bethany (4-5, 2-2) score four times. Senior catcher T.J. Zarewicz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) hit a sacrifice fly, junior 1B Brad Kubis (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) singled in one and junior DH Chuck Ziants (Moundsville, W.Va./Moundsville) singled in a pair to make it 5-0.
Grove City (2-11, 0-1) plated solo runs in the third and fifth before BC answered with a run in the seventh after Leto singled, stole second and raced home on a Ziants’ single. The Wolverines then got back in the game with three runs in the last of the seventh to trim the Bison lead to 6-5.
Following a scoreless eighth, the Green and White put the game away with a six-run outburst in the top of the ninth. Ziants continued his huge day at the dish with a two-run single and freshman 2B Ryan Meier (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) singled in a pair as well. Also collecting RBI in the frame was freshman CF Derek Miller (Rayland, Ohio/Linsly) with an RBI single and Zarewicz with a sacrifice fly.
Bison freshman Josh Dow (Groton, Conn./Griswold) closed the door on the win with a perfect ninth inning. He threw a scoreless two and two-thirds innings and allowed only two hits to earn the save. The win went to junior Ryan Styche (Buena Vista, Pa./Elizabeth Forward), who improved to 1-2 this year after going the first six and a third innings.
Bethany’s bats delivered a season-best 17 hits, with Ziants going 4-for-4 with five RBI, Leto posting three singles and four runs and Meier delivering three hits and a pair of RBI. Kubis also had two hits and two runs scored and Miller hit two singles, scored once and drove in one.
