BISON ERUPT LATE IN 12-5 VICTORY AT GROVE CITY
March 23 - GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Bethany College baseball team never trailed in its PAC game at Grove City Friday, as the Bison took a 5-0 lead in the second inning and clinched the win with six runs in the top of the ninth in a 12-5 triumph over the Wolverines.
Sophomore 3B Juls Leto (McKees Rocks, Pa./OLSH) started a big day by singling with one out in the first, stole second, took third on a passed ball and scored on a single by sophomore LF Dylan Wassel (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward). In the second inning, a GCC error helped Bethany (4-5, 2-2) score four times. Senior catcher T.J. Zarewicz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) hit a sacrifice fly, junior 1B Brad Kubis (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) singled in one and junior DH Chuck Ziants (Moundsville, W.Va./Moundsville) singled in a pair to make it 5-0.
Grove City (2-11, 0-1) plated solo runs in the third and fifth before BC answered with a run in the seventh after Leto singled, stole second and raced home on a Ziants’ single. The Wolverines then got back in the game with three runs in the last of the seventh to trim the Bison lead to 6-5.
Following a scoreless eighth, the Green and White put the game away with a six-run outburst in the top of the ninth. Ziants continued his huge day at the dish with a two-run single and freshman 2B Ryan Meier (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) singled in a pair as well. Also collecting RBI in the frame was freshman CF Derek Miller (Rayland, Ohio/Linsly) with an RBI single and Zarewicz with a sacrifice fly.
Bison freshman Josh Dow (Groton, Conn./Griswold) closed the door on the win with a perfect ninth inning. He threw a scoreless two and two-thirds innings and allowed only two hits to earn the save. The win went to junior Ryan Styche (Buena Vista, Pa./Elizabeth Forward), who improved to 1-2 this year after going the first six and a third innings.
Bethany’s bats delivered a season-best 17 hits, with Ziants going 4-for-4 with five RBI, Leto posting three singles and four runs and Meier delivering three hits and a pair of RBI. Kubis also had two hits and two runs scored and Miller hit two singles, scored once and drove in one.
The Bison are scheduled to complete the conference series with Grove City Saturday at Bethany Park. The doubleheader is slated to start at 1 p.m.
