BETHANY WOMEN TAKE FOURTH AT PAC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Oct. 31 - LATROBE, Pa. – Senior Maggie McCort (Fort Ashby, W.Va./Frankfort) earned Second Team All-PAC for the second consecutive year and freshman Erin Reske (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) also earned all-conference honors to lead the Bethany women’s cross country team to a fourth place finish at the 2009 PAC Cross Country Championships at Saint Vincent.
The finish was the Bison’s best since they took fourth in back-to-back PAC meets in 2005 and 2006. They scored 128 points to just edge out Waynesburg (130) for fourth, while Thomas More finished third with 104. Grove City won its 21st consecutive women’s title by placing four of the top five runners and totaling 17 points to outdistance runner-up Westminster (62).
McCort highlighted the Bethany efforts by crossing the finish line in 10th place with a time of 25:18 for Second Team All-PAC accolades for the second year in a row. She improved three spots from last year’s 13th place finish and it was also the highest place recorded by a Bison since Mallory Roadman took eighth in 2005. In addition, McCort became the first BC runner to earn consecutive All-PAC honors since Tiffany Baumgart recorded her fourth straight all-league honor in 2003.
Reske gave Bethany two all-conference performers for the second season in a row by taking 14th place with a time of 25:51. Her finish culminated an exceptionally strong year for freshmen in the PAC, as seven of the top 14 spots on Saturday were earned by first-year runners. Reske’s All-PAC performance was the first by a Bethany freshman since Amber Platek was Second Team in 2002.
Another strong time was turned in by senior Alissa Moss (Meadow Lands, Pa./Chartiers-Houston), who clipped nearly a minute off her best time this year by clocking in at 27:26, good for 27th place.
Rounding out the Bethany squad on Saturday was freshman Emily Andrews (Absecon, N.J./Holy Spirit), who finished 37th, and senior Jodi Bodo (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville Catholic Central), who was 40th.
The Bison men had just two runners compete as individuals in senior Patrick Miller (Canonsburg, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) and freshman Josh Wentz (Philippi, W.Va./Philip Barbour). Grove City also won the men’s team title, marking the 19th straight year the Wolverines have swept the men’s and women’s PAC cross country championships.
Bethany’s season has one more meet on the schedule, as they will run at the NCAA Mid-East Regionals Saturday, Nov. 14 at Lehigh University.
