Sept. 2 – BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany College field hockey team (0-3) suffered a 2 -1 defeat at the hands of Washington & Jefferson College on Tuesday evening.
The Presidents got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead at the 18th minute. Caroline Kallos took a pass from Natalie Paul to find the back of the net.
The score would remain the same heading into intermission.
The second half saw the Bison come out with an edge, showing aggressive play on both sides of the field.
That aggression would lead to the Bison’s first goal of the year, as the hosts would tie the game 1-1. Freshman Hunter Webster (Newark, Del./Newark) found the back of the net on a beautiful pass from junior Taylor Solomon (Beltsville, Md./Elizabeth Seton) in the 49th minute of regulation.
Unfortunately, W&J would answer back just minutes later with a goal of their own, reclaiming the lead, 2-1.
The Green & White would have several more scoring chances but were unable to capitalize, eventually falling by the same count.
The second half was owned by Bethany as they outshot W&J, 9-5. Bethany also added five corner kicks in the second stanza.
Offensively, Bethany was led by Webster and Solomon. Webster scored the lone Bison goal, while Solomon registered an assist. Sophomore Latisha Cuffee (Virginia Beach, Va./Green Run) and junior Courtney Gill (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands Regional) both added three shots.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tiffany McCary (Hanover Township, Pa./Hanover) did well between the pipes, logging three saves on 13 shots.
The Bison will hit the field on Friday, Sept. 5, when they play host to visiting Wilson College. Game time for the match is slated for 7:00 p.m.
