Sept. 20 – SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Bethany College field hockey team grabbed their second win of the year as they defeated Sweet Briar College, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon.
Neither team was able to get any offense going, as the game would remain scoreless heading into halftime.
Bethany was able to dominate the first half, outshooting the hosts 9-2, while also winning the corners battle, 3-1.
After both offenses once again started the second half slow, the Bison finally capitalized, taking a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute of action. Freshman Morgan Turner (Frederick, Md./Frederick) recorded her second goal of the year on a pass from sophomore Lauren Rao (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) to give the Bison the advantage.
Bethany was able to then hold on for the final eight minutes of play, as they grabbed a hard-fought win over Sweet Briar, 1-0.
Offensively, Bethany was aggressive, logging 21 shots with 17 coming on goal. They also generated six corner opportunities in the triumph.
Equally impressive was the defense, which limited Sweet Briar to just four shots and constantly harassed the Vixen offense.
Turner and Rao led the Bison offense in the victory. Turner scored the winning goal, while Rao added the assist. Juniors Courtney Gill (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands Regional) and Taylor Solomon (Beltsville, Md./Elizabeth Seton) also did well for Bethany, as they combined for six shots with four coming on goal.
The Bison will again play on Sunday, Sept.20, as they travel to take on Roanoke College. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
