August 6 – LATROBE, Pa. – The Bethany College football team, who posted their first .500 conference record since 2010 a year ago, was picked to finish fifth in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference preseason poll, announced the conference office on Wednesday afternoon in Latrobe. The Bison garnered 202 points, including one first-place vote.
Thomas More, who finished tied for first in the conference last year, was picked as the overall number one, totaling 26 first-place votes and 367 points. Washington & Jefferson came in second with 330 points and two first-place votes, while Waynesburg (293 points), Case Western Reserve (246 points) and the Bison rounded out the top five.
“This season is going to be one of the most competitive that this conference has seen,” remarked second-year head coach Bill Garvey. “We were right in almost every game a season ago, and we will look to get over the hump and compete for the title in 2014.”
The next five teams on the preseason poll consisted of Geneva (200 points), Carnegie Mellon (157), Grove City (154), Thiel (149 points) and Westminster (96). Saint Vincent rounded out the poll with 46 points.
The Bison, who start camp on August 13, will open the 2014 campaign at home in a non-conference battle with the Purple Raiders of the University of Mount Union. The contest is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the PAC. To celebrate, the conference released an All-60th Anniversary team at the PAC media day. The six Bison who were named to the list included quarterback Jeff Beer (1977-80), wide receiver Matt Cruse (2006-09), quarterback Matt Grimard (2010-13), offensive lineman Ray Hack (1959-62), running back Eric Walker (2008-11) and wide receiver Denny Williams (1977-80).
