Bison Football Selected Third In PAC Preseason Coaches' Poll
August 5 – LATROBE, Pa. – The Bethany College football team, who earned a post-season berth for the first time since the 1980 season and a 6-5 record one year ago, earned a third-place selection in the 2015 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The poll was released in conjunction with the conference’s media day which was held on Wednesday afternoon in Latrobe. Bethany garnered a total of 265 points for their highest preseason ranking in school history.
Last year’s PAC Champion, Washington & Jefferson, was selected as the overall favorite, earning 368 points and 28 first place votes. Thomas More College was selected at number two, pulling in 341 points and six first-place votes. Both teams were also selected in the Preseason Top-25 by D3football.com. The Bison then followed in third (265). The selection was the highest ever preseason ranking for the Green & White.
“I think that our players really earned the right to be ranked this high,” commented Coach Garvey. “However, regardless of the ranking, it is the players’ responsibility to put together a successful season and to bring focus and intensity from week to week.”
Following the Bison were Waynesburg University (4th-225 points) and Saint Vincent (5th – 212), which rounded out the top five.
The rest of the poll shook out with Westminster in sixth (209 points), Case Western (7th - 169), Carnegie Mellon (8th - 148), Geneva (9th - 128), Thiel (10th - 123) and Grove City (11th - 56) rounding out the list.
Prior to the announcement of the coaches’ poll, all 11 teams were given the opportunity to speak to the media. Along with Coach Garvey, senior wide receiver Eric Blinn was also on hand to speak during the day.
“This has a chance to be a great season for our program,” commented Coach Garvey. “With the number of returning letterwinners and returning starters we have coming to the field, with have high goals for the new year.”
Entering his final season with the Green & White, Blinn enters the season with the opportunity to become one of the most prolific pass catchers in PAC history. The senior needs just 19 catches and 79 yards to become the all-time leader in both categories in the PAC.
“At the end of the day, stats are what they are,” commented Blinn when asked about his numbers. “Even with all the success that I have had, my ultimate goal this season is the same as it has been over the last three years, to win a conference championship.”
Bethany will open the 2015 campaign on Saturday, September 5 when they travel to Alliance, Ohio to take on The University of Mount Union.
