Junior Delonte’ Joyce (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) totaled a career-best, 27 points, and senior Leslie Addy (Columbia, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) tied a career-mark in rebounds with 19, as the Bison won their fourth-consecutive season opener.
The Bison found themselves down three points early, 7-4, on a basket by Frostburg State’s Robert Williams, but quickly bounced back, going on a 14-3 run that spanned just over four minutes of game time. Addy was vital in the run, notching nine-straight points, including a layup with 12:45 remaining in the half to give Bethany the 18-10 lead.
Bethany would extend the lead to nine points before the Bobcats made a run of their own. Frostburg would go on an 11-1 run that spanned over five minutes, and would tie the game at 25-25 on free throws by Torrell Goodman with 5:26 left on the clock in the first half. Both teams would score 15 more points in the half, and would go into the locker room knotted at 40-40.
In the first half, Addy stuffed the stat sheet, registering a double-double over the first ten minutes of the contest. He finished the first half with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Joyce had also had himself a half, already surpassing his previous career high of nine, as he had 13 going into the locker room. Bethany shot 42.9 percent in the first half.
In the second stanza, the game was all Bison as Bethany never once trailed in the second half. On back-to-back baskets by Addy and Joyce, Bethany pushed their lead to five with 17:51 remaining in the game.
The Bobcats would cut the Bison advantage to one, before Bethany went on another large run, this one 12-2, which was capped by back-to-back buckets by Joyce to give Bethany a 61-50 lead with 12:01 to play.
Bethany would stretch the lead to as large as 12 on a three-point bucket by Addy with 10:47 to play and would continue to trade baskets with the Bobcats, not allowing Frostburg State to get any closer than seven points the rest of the way, en route to the 79-69 victory.
Joyce finished the game with a game-high 27 points on 10-14 shooting from the field. He also added a team-best four steals and was 6-of-11 from the free throw line.
Addy notched his first double-double of the season, finishing the contest with 19 points and 19 boards, tying a career-high which he set against Geneva College last season. Other players in double figures for the Bison included Lawrence Weldon, (Baltimore, Md./Poly) who finished with 15 points, and Kevin Jackson (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook) who totaled 10.
As a team, the Bison controlled the glass, out-rebounding the Bobcats 52-38. The Bison also forced the Bobcats into 17 turnovers on the day, while coming away with 11 steals in the contest.
Bethany will return to Hummel Field House on Tuesday, Nov. 19 for the team’s first home contest of the season against the Purple Raiders of the University of Mount Union. The contest is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start.
