Men's Basketball tabbed third in preseason poll

Complete Release

Nov. 11 – GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Bethany College men’s basketball team was picked to finish third in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Preseason Coaches’ Poll announced the league office Friday afternoon.

Thomas More, last season’s PAC runner-up, was tabbed as the preseason favorite after receiving six first-place votes. Four-time defending champion Saint Vincent earned three first-place votes and was picked to finish second, while the Bison secured the final first-place vote to slot third in the poll.

Bethany second-year Head Coach Nick Hager returns his entire starting lineup, including his top-three leading scorers, from a team that went 17-10 overall last season and made an appearance in the PAC Semifinals. Hager also has the luxury of being one of two teams (Thomas More) to return multiple All-PAC performers from last year.

Senior All-PAC First-Team guard Antonio Rudolph (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) ranked second on the team with 12.1 points per game (ppg.) and led the PAC with 8.2 rebounds per game. The versatile guard also ranked fourth in the league with 3.9 assists per game and is the only first team all-conference honoree from a season ago that returns this year.

Junior Calique Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa./Obama Academy), an All-PAC Honorable Mention selection in 2015-16, led the team and ranked 11th in the league with 13.3 ppg. and will help solidify the backcourt.

Junior forward Andrew Williams (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) and senior forward Javonte’ Trujillo (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) head the frontcourt. Williams averaged 11.3 ppg. last season, while Trujillo ranked fifth on the team with 7.6 ppg. and second with 4.8 rebounds per game.

Hager and the Bison open the season on Friday, November 18 at 8 p.m. when they head to Cresson, Pennsylvania to play Mount Aloysius in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament. Bethany’s first home game of the 2016-17 season is on November 22 when the Bison entertain Carnegie Mellon at 7 p.m.
