Jan. 18 – LATROBE, Pa. – The Bethany College women’s swimming & diving team were able to split, beating Chatham 159-99 and falling to Saint Vincent 142-111, while the men’s swimming & diving squad fell to Saint Vincent 128-115 on Saturday.
Leading the way for the women’s side was Alexi Pyles (Los Angeles, Calif./Granada Hills Charter), who grabbed three wins on the day. She touched first in the 100 yard backstroke (1:05.71), 100 yard butterfly (1:02.62), and the 200 yard individual medley (2:24.94). She was also a member of the victorious 200 yard freestyle relay team (1:48.02).
Joining Pyles in the winner’s circle were Marina Baker (Winchester, Va./Sherando) and Christine Pray (Canton, Mich./Canton). Baker, who was also a member of the relay team, continued her dominance this season by winning the 50 yard freestyle (25.56). Pray was able to touch first in the 500 yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 5:39:33.
Also swimming legs on the 200 yard relay team, were Leah Widmeyer (Summit Point, W. Va./Washington) and Taylor Jacobs (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion). Widmeyer finished third in 1000 yard freestyle (12:26.63), while Jacobs had a second-place finish in the 500 yard freestyle (5:53.46).
On the men’s side, the Bison were unable to grab the victory, falling to the Bearcats in a close one, 128-115. Jacob Collas (South Park, Pa./South Park) led the way for Bethany, notching victories in both the 200 yard breaststroke (2:27.32) and the 200 yard individual medley (2:13.97). He was also a member of the 200 yard medley relay team that finished first (1:47.80).
Others swimming legs on the relay team were, Grant Ashcraft (Penns Grove,N.J./Woodstown), Craig Starks (Milwaukee, Wisc./Rufus King International), and Jeremy Starr (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding ). Ashcraft took second in the 200 yard individual medley (2:27.75), while Starks and Starr were also members of the 200 yard freestyle relay team, which finished in first-place (1:36.51).
The other members of the relay team were Kelly Faralla (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville Broadview Heights) and Cody Hussey. Faralla finished second in the 1000 yard freestyle (11:53.86), while Hussey grabbed a second-place finish in the 500 yard freestyle (5:44.22).
Other notable winners on the day were Brandon Martell (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) and Danny Faix (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood). Martell grabbed first-place in the 1 meter dive (128.20), while Faix was victorious in the 500 yard freestyle (5:26.32).
The teams will be back in the water on Feb. 1, when they play host to Grove City College. Action is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
