Bethany Track & Field Kicks Off Indoor Season at WVU Invite

Jan. 18 – MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The Bison track & field program started off in the indoor portion of the 2014 campaign by taking six individuals to the West Virginia University Invitational on Saturday. Of the six athletes that went, all six placed in the top ten in an event, with five of the competitors cracking the top five.

Sophomore Kyle Minger (Richmond, Ohio/Edison Local) had the most notable day for the Bison as he took home top honors in the 400 meter dash with a total time of 51.27. His time was .43 seconds faster than the second-place competitor and over a full second ahead of the third place finisher. Minger also raced in the 200 meter dash, where he placed ninth with a total time of 23.82 seconds.

Other top-five finishers on the day included sophomores Umar Moore (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon) and Maria Jackson-McBride (Spotsylvania, Va./West Potomac), as well as freshmen Wesley Scott (Kingwood, W. Va./Preston) and Andre Butler (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville).

Moore captured second place in the triple jump with a distance of 43’2”. He also earned third place in the long jump in a field of 23 competitors. He finished the day with a best jump of 21’11”.  Jackson-McBride also notched a third-place finish, achieving the feat in the 200 meter dash with a total time of 26.86 seconds. She was also the first Division III athlete to cross the finish line, finishing behind only Ashanti Bess of West Virginia and Lexie Nowakowski of Slippery Rock University.

Scott, who placed 12th in the 400 meters (55.17) made his mark on the day by placing fourth in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 2:48.91. Butler also notched a fourth place finish, taking fourth in the 400 meter dash (53.59).

Freshman Lauren Rao (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) also made her mark on the event, finishing ninth out of a field of 20 in the high jump.

The Bison will next be in action on Saturday, Jan. 25, when they travel to Denison, Ohio for the Denison University Invitational.
