May 9 – MEADVILLE, Pa. – With the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships looming, the Bethany track and field teams took to the track for one more regular season meet as they competed at the Gator Invitational hosted by Allegheny College on Friday.
On the men’s side, the Bison were led by Umar Moore (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon), Kyle Minger (Richmond, Ohio/Edison Local) and the 4x100 relay team.
Minger had a record-breaking day for the Bison as he finished second in the 400 meter dash, turning in his top performance of the season. Minger posted a time of 48.82, which not only qualified him for the ECAC Championships, but also shattered the Bethany school record. The previous record was held Brian Dickman, who set the record in 1994 and held the mark for 20 years. Minger then followed that performance with a 5th-place mark in the 200 meter dash (22.50).
Moore, who had already qualified for the ECAC Championships earlier in the year, posted a first-place finish in the triple jump, posting a top distance of 44’ 11 ¾”. He was also a member of the 4x100 meter relay team that tied a school record.
The 4x100 team of Moore, Shawn Burns (Weirton, W. Va./Weir), Anthony Thompson (Colquitt, Ga./Miller County) and Georgio Cineus (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) tied their own school record from earlier this year, finishing with a time of 42.63, which also qualified them for the ECAC Championships.
Burns, Thompson and Cineus all also competed in the 100 meter dash. Thompson finished 12th in the prelims (11.11), while Cineus (11.15) and Burns (11.29) notched 15th and 18th place, respectively.
The 4x400 relay team notched a first place finish in the meet, finishing with a time of 3:25.72. The team consisted of Thompson, Minger, Dillon Handy (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) and Andre Butler (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville). Handy also notched a 10th-place mark in the 400 hurdles (57.23), while Butler notched an 11th-place finish in the 400 meter run (51.45).
On the women’s side, the Bison captured three ECAC qualifying times, which included performances by Kiera Goolsby (Washington, Pa./Washington), Paige Prato (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) and Maria Jackson-McBride (Spotyslvania, Va./West Potomac).
Prato captured an ECAC qualifying time for the second time this season, finishing with a time of 12.58 in the prelims. She then followed that with a sixth-place finish in the 100 meter final, posting a time of 12.72. She also ran in the 200 meter dash, posting an eighth-place mark with a time of 26.43.
Goolsby and Jackson-McBride also posted qualifying times during the meet. Goolsby qualified in the 100 meter prelims, posting a time of 12.61, while Jackson-McBride qualified in the 400 meter dash, notching a sixth-place finish with a time 59.32. She also scored a ninth-place finish in the 200 meter dash (26.57).
Lauren Rao (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) also competed over the course of the day, posting a 13th-place finish in the 100 prelims (13.05) and a 10th-place mark in the 400 meter dash (1:01.83).
The Bison will be back in action on Thursday and Friday, May 15th and 16th when those that have qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Championships will compete in the event, which will be hosted by RPI in Troy, N.Y.
