Sept. 3 - PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Bethany College volleyball team had their 2008 season opener end on a down note Wednesday night with a 3-0 loss (21-25, 18-25, 21-25) at LaRoche (Pa.) College.

The young Bison team saw 12 of its 17 players making their collegiate debut and it was a freshman who led the way. Outside hitter Alyssa Schrecengost (Wexford, Pa./Vincentian) posted team-highs of 14 kills and nine digs, while freshman setter Megan Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) handed out 27 assists in the setback.

Other big hitters for the Green and White included freshman Courtney Meadows (Canton, Ohio/McKinley) with nine kills and freshman Mallory McKnight (Pataskala, Ohio/Newark Catholic) with seven. Joining Schrecengost in top defensive efforts was junior Rachael Dunham (Gans, Pa./Albert Gallatin) with nine digs.

The Bison will turn around and go back to LaRoche for a tournament this weekend. Bethany will play Chatham at 5 p.m. Friday evening before facing Point Park (Pa.) University’s Gold (JV) team at 8 p.m. On Saturday, BC will take on Roberts Wesleyan at 10 a.m. to conclude pool play, then get matched up with another team for a second match later that day.
