Sept. 8 - BETHANY, W.Va. – Paced by a balanced attack featuring five hitters with five or more kills, the Bethany College volleyball team swept past Franciscan 3-0 Wednesday night to improve their record to 5-0 this season.

The 5-0 start is the first in the volleyball program’s history at Bethany, who coasted past the visiting Barons (3-1) 25-13 in the opening set. The Bison kept the momentum going with a decisive 25-14 victory in the second and finished off the sweep with a 25-18 decision in the third set.

Reigning PAC Player of the Week Jessica Zavatchen (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) sparked the BC attack with 37 assists. Pacing the hitters were junior Carrie Talkington (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) and sophomore Taylor Cassidy (Barboursville, W.Va./Cabell Midland) with 10 kills apiece. Chipping in with seven kills was sophomore Meredith Holl (Mogadore, Ohio), while sophomore Lauren Goodwill (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) delivered six and five kills came from junior Jessica Cole (Connellsville, Pa.), who also had three aces.

Bethany’s defense also posted balanced numbers, with junior Megan Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) bringing up eight digs and Cole recording seven.

The Bison will try to continue their perfect start to the year during a busy upcoming weekend. On Friday, they travel to Ohio Wesleyan for a non-conference match at 7 p.m. Then on Saturday, Bethany begins PAC competition with a tri-match at Thiel with Washington & Jefferson.
