Sept. 15 - WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Bethany College volleyball team (3-8, 0-2) opened PAC competition Saturday by dropping 3-0 decisions to Grove City (Pa.) College and Waynesburg (Pa.) University.

The day started with a match-up against Grove City (Pa.) College, who was off to a 9-1 start this year and had won the same Ohio Wesleyan and Penn State Behrend Tournaments that Bethany had played in the last two weekends. The Wolverines would continue their fast start to the year by sweeping BC 30-18, 30-19, 30-28.

Senior Lauren Spegal (Bethel Park, Pa.) led Bethany with 11 kills and also hit double figures with 10 digs. Freshman Emily Stewart (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) nearly hit double digits in kills with nine. Junior setter Kim McKay (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) racked up 25 assists, while the defensive efforts were led by senior Michelle Fowler (Mather, Pa./Jefferson-Morgan) with 21 digs.

In addition, sophomore Rachael Dunham (Gans, Pa./Albert Gallatin) finished with 12 digs and also served up a team-high three aces.

In their second match of the day, the Green and White battled Waynesburg through three tough games, but the Yellow Jackets would prevail by scores of 30-25, 30-23, 30-23.

Spegal and Stewart once again led Bethany’s hitters with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while McKay accumulated 23 assists. Spegal also led BC in digs with 15, while Fowler and freshman Sarah Olson (Rices Landing, Pa./Jefferson-Morgan) each brought up 12 digs.

Bethany returns to the court Monday night with a non-conference tilt against Franciscan (Ohio) University. The match will be the Bison’s first at home this season after beginning the campaign with 11 consecutive road contests. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
