Sept. 3 - HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Bethany College volleyball team opened its 2011 season Saturday with a pair of victories on the first day of the Haverford (Pa.) College Tournament, as the Bison bested Susquehanna 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-15) and Coast Guard 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 21-25, 25-19).

Bethany opened the year with an impressive sweep over Susquehanna. Junior setter Jessica Zavatchen (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) went over 2,400 career assists by passing out 28, which set up a balanced attack. Junior Taylor Cassidy (Barboursville, W.Va./Cabell Midland) totaled seven kills and senior Carrie Talkington (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) and junior Lauren Goodwill (Canton, Ohio/Jackson) both had six, while Talkington also picked up four solo blocks.

On the defensive side, senior Tiffany Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) had 13 digs.

The match with Coast Guard was closer from start to finish, but BC recovered from a third-set defeat to close out the victory in four. Cassidy had a big game again with a team-best 15 kills and was joined in double figures by Talkington with 12. Zavatchen was credited with 40 assists to trigger the offense.

Bethany’s defense was strong in the second match, as Tiffany Hoffman brought up 25 digs and twin sister Megan Hoffman (Cambridge, Ohio/John Glenn) totaled 13. At the net, Talkington picked up three assisted blocks and freshman Breana Harris (Severn, Md./Old Mill) collected three solo blocks.

The Bison will be back in action Sunday with two more matches. They will take on Frostburg State at 2 p.m. before completing the weekend with a match against host Haverford at 6 p.m.
