Jan. 9 - LATROBE, Pa. – Saint Vincent used as 14-2 run to blow open a close game in the second half and claim a 70-56 victory over the Bethany women’s basketball team Saturday night in Latrobe, Pa.

The Bison battled back from an early six-point deficit with an 11-3 spurt, capped off by a three-point play from freshman Taylor Kress (Sharpsville, Pa.), to take an 18-16 lead. The Bearcats answered back with 12 of the next 14 points, as they built a 30-23 lead going into halftime.

Saint Vincent’s lead grew to 38-28 early in the second half, but Bison junior Tara Harris (Zanesville, Ohio) drilled a three, which was she followed with two straight hoops to trim the deficit to 38-35. However, the hosts responded with another surge, as their 14-2 run swelled their cushion up to 52-37 midway through the period.

Bethany made one more push to get back into the game, as a three-point play by sophomore Renee Shepherd (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) brought the Green and White within eight (61-53) with three minutes on the clock. That was as close as Bethany would get to the Bearcats, who scored the game’s final six points to extend the margin to 14 by the final buzzer.

Leading the Bison offense was Shepherd, who tallied 18 points, one off her career-best, and she also grabbed seven rebounds. Harris also had double digits with 11 off the bench for Bethany, who out-rebounded SVC 40-35, but committed 28 turnovers that were converted into 32 Bearcat points.

For Saint Vincent, Maria Baroffio and Melissa Mansur each scored 16 and Devin McGrath totaled 11 points and nine rebounds.

Bethany will return to the floor Wednesday when they host defending league champion Thomas More in a 6 p.m. tip-off at Hummel Field House.
