Oct. 23 - PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Bethany women’s basketball team was picked to finish third in the preseason poll released at the 2008-09 PAC Basketball Media Day, held at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh Thursday afternoon.
Voters in the poll included conference head coaches, sports information directors and members of the media present at the conference media day.
The Bison, who return all five starters from last year’s team that went 15-11 overall and 10-4 in the PAC, received 175 points in the balloting. Thomas More, winners of back-to-back league crowns, received 27 first place votes and topped the poll with 244 points, while Washington & Jefferson earned three first place nods and 216 points.
Following Bethany was Westminster (151), Chatham (106), Grove City (94), Thiel (86, one first place vote) and Waynesburg (44).
“We have a nice core coming back and like everyone else, we are going for a conference championship,” said fifth-year head coach Rebecca Upton. “We have great leadership on our team and some young players who can contribute this year. We have the ability to be the top team in the conference, but we just have to take care of business.”
The Bison begin the season Saturday, Nov., 22 against Manchester (Ind.) College in the first round of the Wooster (Ohio) Tip-Off Tournament. Bethany begins PAC play Dec. 3 at Thomas More and will host Waynesburg Dec. 6 in their initial home contest of the season.
