Bethany Women’s Hoops Tames Tomcats

Dec.6 – GREENVILLE, Pa. – Powered by freshman forward Kelsea Daugherty’s (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) second career double-double, the Bethany College women’s basketball team (4-3, 1-1 PAC) picked up their first Presidents’ Athletic Conference victory of the year by defeating Thiel College, 70-65, on Saturday afternoon.

With the Bison trailing early 15-14, they were able to go on the first run of the game, embarking on a 7-1 output to take a 21-15 lead with 9:36 remaining in the first frame. The run saw sophomore Alexis Naples (Salem, Ohio/South Range), junior Gabrielle Naples (Salem, Ohio/South Range) and freshman Kelsi Settle (Sebring, Ohio/Sebring) all find the bottom of the net.

The Tomcats would storm back, going on an 18-11 run to take a 33-32 lead with just 3:39 to play in the first half.

Thiel would then enter intermission with a three-point lead (39-36) over the Bison.

Leading the Green & White in the first frame was Daugherty, who scored a team-high 16 points, including going a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Bethany’s defense was also very aggressive, forcing the Tomcats into 13 turnovers.

The Bison would come out of the second half with a purpose, going on a 15-5 run to take a seven-point lead (51-44) with 14:18 left to play. Sophomore Lauren Simpson (Washington, Pa./Trinity) was the catalyst hitting back-to-back 3-pointers.

The Green & White would continue to hold the lead, as sophomore Hayley Holenka (Shadyside, Ohio/Shadyside) tallied a bucket to push the lead to 62-55 with 4:34 remaining.

Bethany would then hold on to capture the triumph over the Tomcats, 70-65

The Bison were led by Daugherty, Simpson and Gabrielle Naples. Daugherty had a great performance, setting career-highs in points (22) and rebounds (12) on her way to her second career double-double. Simpson was also impressive, hitting two threes en route to eight points. Naples notched 11 points, six assists and four rebounds.

Bethany’s defense was also a major factor in the win, limiting the Tomcats to just 3-of-12 from three-point land and forcing 23 turnovers.

The squad will hit the court next on Wednesday, Dec. 10 as they play host to Penn State – Behrend. Tipoff for the contest is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
