Bison Women's Basketball Drops PAC Contest to Grove City

Feb. 18 – BETHANY, W. Va. – Playing in their final home game of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference regular season, the Bethany College women’s basketball team (12-12, 8-9 PAC) dropped a tough 70-64 decision to Grove City College on Wednesday evening.

The largest lead of the first half belonged to Grove City as they opened a six-point advantage (15-9) on a bucket by Teresa Dellatore with 11:36 remaining in the stanza. The Bison would then need just three minutes to quickly counter with a 7-0 run and re-take the lead. Junior Mikyla Tipton (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville) scored five straight points which were followed by a fast-break bucket by Gabrielle Naples (Salem, Ohio/South Range), giving Bethany a 16-15 lead with 9:36 to go.

The rest of the half would see four ties and three lead changes with neither team pulling away by more than a bucket. However, the Bison would find themselves down by three, 30-27, at intermission.

The first ten minutes of the second half began just as the last 10 minutes of the first half ended, with both teams jockeying for position. The second half saw three more ties and five additional lead changes before Grove City was able to pull back ahead by six (48-42) on a pair of free throws by Lexi Arkwright with 8:48 to play.

The Wolverine would eventually grow to its largest of the game at 60-51 with 3:03 to play. However, a 9-4 run would pull the Green & White back to within four on a three by Naples with just under a minute remaining.

Down the stretch, the Bison could gain no ground against Grove City thank to solid free throw shooting by the Wolverines. Grove City converted on all eight of their free throws in the final minute, and the Bison fell by the six-point difference, 70-64.

Offensively, the Bison were led in the contest by Tipton, who fell just one-point shy of her career high with 21 points and eight rebounds. Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) notched her 10th double-double of the season and second in a row as she finished with 14 points and 14 boards.

For the Wolverines, Kathryn Erbelding lead all scorers in the game with 28 points, the most scored by any individual Bison opponent this season.

Despite the loss, the Green & White have still clinched a first-round home game for the upcoming Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championship Tournament which will take place on Monday, February 23.

Bethany will conclude the regular season portion of their scheduled on Saturday, February 21 when they travel to Washington, Pa. to take on the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson College. Game time is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
