Dec. 6 - BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany women’s basketball team had a one-point lead late, but Waynesburg’s Jeannette Wonsettler canned three-pointers on consecutive trips down the floor to help send the Yellow Jackets to a 57-52 victory over the Bison Saturday afternoon.

Wonsettler’s baskets capped a roller coaster final 10 minutes, which featured six lead changes and two ties. Waynesburg (2-3, 2-0) led 29-23 at halftime and saw its lead balloon to as much as eight (36-28) with 16:24 to play. Bethany (1-6, 0-2) scored seven straight to get right back in the game and set up the final 10 minutes.

The Bison took their only of the second half on a lay-up from senior Susannah Cartland (Harvard, Ill.) to go in front 49-48 at the 2:53 mark. Two possessions later, Wonsettler drained a three to give the Yellow Jackets the lead for good at 51-49 with 2:04 left. After the Bison missed a shot on the other end, Wonsettler buried another triple to give the visitors a 54-49 advantage and they held off BC to win their second straight game to open conference play.

Neither team shot very well in the contest, with Bethany hitting 33.8 percent (22-65) from the floor and Waynesburg connecting on 33.3 percent (17-51). The main difference was the Yellow Jackets sinking eight three-pointers, while BC canned only two, and Waynesburg’s 15 free throws compared to the Bison hitting just 6-of-13 attempts from the foul line.

Bethany’s top scorer was senior Kaitlyn McCormick (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park), who tallied 11. Leading Waynesburg was Callie White with 19 and Wonsettler with 11.

The Bison will return to the hardwood Wednesday in a non-conference fray when they host Denision (Ohio) University at 7:30 p.m.
