Women's Basketball Drops Hard-Fought Decision To Waynesburg

Jan. 10 – WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Junior Mikyla Tipton (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville) scored a career-high 22 points, and forwards Sami Schott (Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) and Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) each added double-doubles as the Bethany women’s basketball team (7-6, 3-3 PAC) dropped a 73-65 decision to Waynesburg University on Saturday.

The Green & White jumped out to an early five-point lead as a three-point basket by  Daugherty gave the Bison a 10-5 advantage with 14:26 to play. The host Yellow Jackets would respond with a 12-0 run, however, to take a seven-point lead (17-10) with 10:13 to play.

The Bison would quickly return the favor, going on their own 7-0 run to knot the game at 17-17. Tipton would score five of her team-leading 12 first-half points during the run, including the tying basket with 8:48 to play.

With Waynesburg holding a five-point lead (24-19), Tipton would once again come up big. After Schott  pulled  the Bison within three, Tipton hit her second three pointer of the half, once again knotting the game at 24-24 with 2:33 to play.

Neither team could gain any ground the rest of the half, and the Bison found themselves trailing by a 30-29 score at the break.

The second half saw the lead change hands five times over the first 2:15 of the frame. Schott gave the Bison a 35-34 lead with a layup at the 17:43 mark. The Green & White would then push their lead to five, 51-46, on a layup by Lauren Simpson (Washington, Pa./Trinity) with 9:47 remaining.

Waynesburg would respond once again, this time embarking on a 20-8 run over the next six minutes. The Yellow Jackets would match their largest lead of the game, taking a seven-point advantage (66-59) on a basket by Rebecca Kerr with 3:12 left. Waynesburg would hold the Bison at bay over the rest of regulation, handing the Green & White the 73-65 defeat.

Tipton led the way for the Bison offensively as she played efficiently, converting on 8-of-13 from the field including 2-of-3 from deep and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line for a career high 22 points. It marked the second 20-point game of Tipton’s career as she also added five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Schott and Daugherty also played well as each picked up a double-double in the game. For Daugherty, the feat marked her second-consecutive double-double, as she finished with 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Her rebound total bested her previous high of 13 which she set on Wednesday at Thomas More. Schott finished the game with her first double-double of the season, totaling 11 points and a season-high 13 rebounds.

Despite the loss, the Bison are still off to their best start since the 2011-12 campaign, sitting at 7-6 and 3-3 in conference play.

The Green & White will be back in action on Wednesday, January 14 as they travel to New Wilmington, Pa. for a contest with Westminster College. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
