The recipients, selected based on their demonstration of outstanding scholarship and other contributions to the College, were presented with awards during the Honors Day Convocation held in Commencement Hall in Bethany’s historic Old Main.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
Lauren E. Simpson, a senior Communications & Media Arts major from Washington, Pennsylvania, received the prestigious Francis O. Carfer Prize as the Outstanding Senior. Simpson is the daughter of Larry and Beth Simpson. The Francis O. Carfer Prize is presented to the senior, who in the judgment of the Honors Committee, has made the most outstanding contribution to the College. Recipients must exhibit sound academic accomplishments along with characteristics of loyalty, service and devotion to Bethany. Simpson also received the Charlotte Manion Yurko Award for demonstrating excellence in the study of Communications.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
Brittany M. Fullbright, a senior Biology major from Wadsworth, Ohio, received the Bethany 2000 Prize. Fullbright is the daughter of Mike and Tonya Fullbright. The Bethany 2000 Prize recognizes the senior who has best demonstrated loyalty and commitment to Bethany College in a wide range of activities over the course of his or her studies. The recipient must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate the characteristics of enthusiasm, dependability and dedication. Fullbright also received the Leonard Emory Yurko Award for excellence in the Pre-Professional Studies, and the B.R. Weimer Award for excellence in Biology.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
Samantha F. Binkley, a junior Chemistry major from Ontario, Canada, received the Pittsburgh Bethany College Club Award as Outstanding Junior Woman. Binkley is the daughter of Dwayne and Jacqueline Binkley. The award is based on the qualities of leadership, character, conduct and scholarship. The Club, comprised of Bethany alumni in the Pittsburgh area, has placed a plaque in Phillips Hall upon which the names of the winners are engraved.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
Ryan M. Nickerson, a junior Finance & Managerial Economics major from Huntington Beach, California, received the W.F. Kennedy Prize. Nickerson is the son of Chris and Linda Nickerson. The prize, established by Kennedy of Wheeling, West Virginia, is awarded on the basis of the student’s contribution to the College, community life though leadership in activities, personal character and scholarship.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
Olivia A. Konopka of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and 
Ashley N. Worst of Apollo, Pennsylvania, received the John R. Taylor Award. This award is presented to student(s) who demonstrate exceptional scholastic achievement; service to the College in terms of cross-disciplinary extracurricular activity; and a deep understanding of, and abiding commitment to, the core liberal arts values expressed in the Mission documents of Bethany College. The award is named in memory of John R. Taylor ’44, Professor of English Emeritus. Konopka is also the recipient of the Chapman Award for excellence in History and the Frank Roy Gay Award for excellence in Interdisciplinary Studies. Worst is also the recipient of the David Judy Prize, the Manion Award and the Wagner Award for excellence in the Visual and Performing Arts. Worst is also the recipient of the Marybeth Trout Horsemanship Award for excellence in Equine Studies.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]
In addition to the student awards, the President’s Awards for Excellence in Performance for a member of the Bethany faculty and the staff were also announced. Dr. Adam Fletcher, Associate Professor of Mathematics, received the faculty award. Deidra Parr, Assistant Vice President for Finance, received the staff award.
Dr. Tamara Rodenberg, President of Bethany College, presided over the Honors Day Convocation with the College’s Honors Committee, chaired by Dr. Gary Kappel. Faculty members serving on the Honors Committee are: Dr. Jessie Janeshek, Professor Kenn Morgan, Dr. Robert Spangler and Dr. Patrick Sutherland.

Haley A. Thompson received the Beta Beta Beta Prize, which recognizes the student who has received the highest grades in the initial courses in Biology.
Alexandra M. Powell received the Beta Beta Beta – B.R. Weimer Award, which recognizes a senior in Biology who attained the highest academic rank in this major.
Dennis A. Boyce received the Ernest L. & Dorothy Miller Korb Entrepreneurial Spirit Award for excellence in Entrepreneurship.
Stephanie R. Sowers received the Business Award in Management for excellence in Business Management and The Eugene Miller Award for excellence in Economics.
Ashley E. Veryser and Austin G. Paul Orecchio received the Freshman Chemistry Award, which is presented each year to the student who attains the highest grade point average in a freshman-level Chemistry course.
Katherine J. Vallone received the Sara M. Cannon Award, which is presented to an outstanding student who excels in work with the campus broadcast media systems.
J. Kelly Faralla received the James W. Carty, Jr. Award, which is presented to an outstanding student who excels in work with the campus print media.
Megan E. Lindley received the E.E. Roberts Distinguished Prize in Campus Media, which is presented to an outstanding student who excels in work with one of the student media, in academic work in Communications and Media Arts, or both.
Benjamin A. Gavlik received the James Keegan Prize in International Communications, which is presented to a student whose academic achievement reflects an appreciation for the role communication plays in international affairs.
Julie Slezak received the Caldwell Award for Leadership in the Art & Science of Teaching, which is presented to the outstanding senior Elementary Education major who has demonstrated exceptional academic accomplishment.
Callum T. Appleby received the Exceptional Secondary Education Award, which is presented to the senior Secondary Education Major who excels and demonstrates pedagogical strength in his or her instructional strategies and respective field of study. Appleby also received the John J. Knight Award for excellence in Physical Education.
Hayley J. Holenka received the Exceptional Middle Childhood Education Award, which is presented to an exceptional senior Middle Childhood Education major.
Nativa M. O’Brien received the Cammie Pendleton Award, which is presented to the outstanding sophomore majoring in English, and the winner of the W.W. Easton Award, which supports and encourages outstanding Bethany English majors.
Julia A. Bromyard received the Florence Hoagland Memorial Award, which is presented to the outstanding senior English major.
Spencer N. Bowman received the W.W. Eaton Award as an incoming student. The awards are made each year on the basis of applications judged by a committee of English faculty and alumni.
Dakota M. Hudson received the Frank Alfred Chapman Memorial Award for excellence in History.
Kylee M. Clark received the Thomas R. Burns Award in History and Political Science, which is given to an outstanding history student.
Stanislav K. Peceny received the J.S.V. Allen Memorial Award for excellence in Physics.
Zachary J. Lowe received the John G. Chernenko Award which is presented annually to the junior Political Science major with the highest overall grade point average.
Anthony J. Wahlie received the International Relations Award, which is presented to the senior who maintains a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and demonstrates excellence in the study of world politics through coursework, travel and study abroad.
George W. Myers received the Thomas Jefferson Prize in Political Science for excellence in the field of Political Science.
Alexis M. Castro received the Thomas R. Briggs Award for excellence in History and Political Science.
Aidan Garvey received the Osborne Booth Prize for excellence in Religious Studies.
Stacy J. Boston received the Lynn Frantz Adkins Award for Outstanding Involvement in Social Work for excellence within Social Work studies.
Cody W. Hussey received the Lester N. & Helen W. Frantz Award for excellence within the Social Work Department.
Michaela D. Ross received the Leonora Balla Cayard Prize for excellence in German studies.
Christine E. Pray received the Margaret R. Woods Prize for excellence in Spanish and the Pearl Mahaffey Prize for excellence in World Languages and Cultures Department.
Alexis E. Naples received the Theodore R. Kimpton Prize for excellence in French studies.
Kaitlyn M. Tate received the Shirley Morris Memorial Award for excellence in the field of modern languages. This award was established by Theta Chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha in memory of Shirley Morris, a member and past president of the Chapter.
