BETHANY, W.Va. — In light of the recent State of Emergency declaration by West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice, Bethany College stands and supports the state’s decision to suspend the requirement for students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to qualify for major financial aid programs.
The announcement comes amidst widespread challenges with the U.S. Department of Education’s implementation of a new FAFSA form, causing significant hurdles for students and families across West Virginia and the U.S. Justice’s decision aims to alleviate these obstacles, ensuring that programs such as the Promise Scholarship and the Higher Education Grant Program remain accessible to all eligible students, regardless of their FAFSA completion status.

Justice for his leadership and commitment to supporting West Virginia students during these challenging times,” says Bethany President Dr. Jamie Caridi. “Access to financial aid is vital in ensuring that every student has the opportunity to pursue their educational goals without unnecessary barriers. Our enrollment department stands ready to assist students in navigating these changes and accessing the resources they need to succeed.”
Under Justice’s proclamation, students who qualify and apply for the Promise Scholarship by Sept. 1, 2024, will receive an award of up to $5,500 for the 2024-25 academic year. Additionally, eligible students can receive the Higher Education Grant based on their previous FAFSA submission or by demonstrating eligibility through specified programs administered by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
Bethany College is also reminding families of the proactive measures the College announced in March to ease financial uncertainties for prospective students affected by FAFSA delays. $25,000 in gift aid (money you don’t have to pay back from Bethany, federal, and state funds) is guaranteed for all first-time Fall 2024 residential students who have not yet received an estimated financial aid package from the College. This gift aid, which covers 67 percent of tuition, fees, and books, alleviates financial burdens and ensures students can confidently plan their academic future. Additionally, for full Pell grant recipients, gift aid may increase to as much as $39,000 annually depending on additional federal and state grant eligibility. With a commitment to meeting 100% of demonstrated financial need through a combination of federal, state, and institutional aid, Bethany College provides both in and out-of-state students with comprehensive financial aid packages. Students can take advantage of this offer by completing the admission application process and submitting a $200 tuition deposit.
