Faculty Spotlight

Physical and Computational Sciences: Economics

In September, groups of students in Prof. Aaron Honsowetz's Principle of Microeconomics courses applied what they learned in class to outside the classroom. They fanned out across campus to experience the high cost of engaging in barter to acquire goods versus purchasing goods with money. Each group started with a postcard and was instructed to trade it for another item. Then the group was instructed to take the new item received from the trade and trade it for another item. The goal of the group was to use barter to eventually acquire an item they actually wanted.

After the groups finished trading, their final trade was judged by Professors Walsh and Fletcher from the Math Program. Professors Walsh and Fletcher unanimously agreed that the watch acquired by the group composed of freshman Eshaka Conteh, Adam Franco, Kyle Hrehor, and Nathan Mako was the most valuable item acquired from the barter.
