Accessibility Services

About Our Office

Bethany College does not discriminate based on disability status. No person with a disability shall be excluded from participating in any College program, nor be denied benefits of any College program, or otherwise be subject to discrimination on the basis of such disability.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, students with disabilities are due reasonable accommodations in their academic pursuits. A student’s disability should not unfairly interfere with their learning process or evaluation and grading. Bethany College makes every effort to provide reasonable assistance to students with permanent or temporary disabling conditions.

SERVICES AVAILABLE

Students must apply for an accommodation in order to receive accessibility services.

In order to apply for an accommodation on the below-related list, all students must first register with the Section 504 Coordinator by filling out an online Housing and Transportation Accommodation Application.

The following is a list of services generally available for an accommodation request. This list is not exhaustive.

STUDENT ACADEMIC SERVICES

Academic support services are available at the McCann Learning Center. Please reach out to the Learning Center for more information at htaylor@bethanywv.edu or 304.829.7408.

MEDICAL

Medical accommodations can include housing, meal plan, and other medically-related support.

ACCESSIBILITY ACCOMMODATIONS

Accessibility accommodations can include physical access to buildings and classrooms. A student can request these accommodations for both permanent and temporary disabilities.

To be approved for a housing, meal, or accessibility accommodation at Bethany College, you must complete the following:

  1. Register with the Section 504 Coordinator’s Office by submitting a Housing and Transportation Accommodation Application.
  2. Submit a completed Licensed Professional Questionnaire with a licensed professional who is credentialed in the area related to the diagnosed condition for which the accommodation is being requested. Documentation provided must not be more than one year old.
  3. Meet with the Section 504 Coordinator or their designee.
HOUSING ACCOMMODATIONS

Housing accommodations can include a wide range of potential requests, including room selection, ADA-accessible housing, and more.

To be approved for a housing, meal, or accessibility accommodation at Bethany College, you must complete the following:

  1. Register with the Section 504 Coordinator’s Office by submitting a Housing and Transportation Accommodation Application.
  2. Submit a completed Licensed Professional Questionnaire with a licensed professional who is credentialed in the area related to the diagnosed condition for which the accommodation is being requested. Documentation provided must not be more than one year old.
  3. Meet with the Section 504 Coordinator or their designee.
EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ANIMALS

In an effort to better assist students who are requesting that their Emotional Support Animal (ESA) be permitted to live with them in Bethany College property, the Office of Student Life has developed separate guidelines for ESAs, which are listed below.

You must complete and submit all five of these documents in order to apply for this accommodation.

  1. Register with the Section 504 Coordinator by filling out an online Housing and Transportation Accommodation Application.
  2. Submit a completed Licensed Professional Questionnaire – ESA.
    Please Note: There are individuals and organizations that sell emotional support animal and/or service animal certification/registration documents online. These documents are typically not recognized by the ADA and the Department of Justice as proof of an emotional support animal or service animal. There are no official registries or certifications.
  3. Submit a completed Veterinarian Questionnaire.
  4. Submit an up-to-date picture of your ESA.
  5. Schedule a meeting with the Section 504 Coordinator’s Office.

Contact the Section 504 Coordinator to schedule your in-person or virtual meeting. During an initial meeting, the Coordinator will discuss with you:

  • Submitted documentation
  • Additional documentation, if needed
  • Any other relevant information

Privacy Note: All documentation submitted to the Section 504 Coordinator is kept separate from an academic record and is considered private under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). There are times when the Section 504 Coordinator must share information with other faculty and/or staff on campus to facilitate accommodations in the classroom, residence halls, or transportation.

SERVICE ANIMALS

All Service Animal requests must be sent to the Section 504 Coordinator, and will be evaluated on an individualized basis.

In order to request an accommodation for a Service Animal, please contact the Section 504 Coordinator at kcarpenter@bethanywv.edu or 304.829.7064.
